Our story

Why reKappel exists.

We like wine. After a good evening there was often a bottle on the table that was too fine for the bottle bank, and we could not keep them all. So we started making things from them in our kitchen.

A heavy wine bottle lasts far longer than the wine it held. As a candle or a vase, it stays in the house.

reKappel [ri:ˈkʌp(ə)l] comes from re-couple, to bring together again. Our family name, Kappel, is in it too.

Dietmar & Sarah Kappel — the two behind reKappel.

Bottles from all over Austria.

We collect the empty bottles from wineries and restaurants across Austria; the wines come from Burgundy, Bordeaux and Styria, among other places. In Kitzeck we make candles, vases and pictures from them by hand. No two bottles are alike, so no two candles are either.

What happens to the wax

Wax can be melted again. Wineries, restaurants and households bring us burnt-down candles; we clean the wax and pour it again. It does not work without some fresh wax, though. Only with it are the scent and burning time right.

What our logo means

The arrow brings back what would otherwise be lost.

The three dots stand for what matters to us: people, craft and nature.

The heart for the fact that everything here is made with love — and that we are proud of our small contribution.

Made by hand in Kitzeck.
